3D Mammography Breast Cancer Screenings:
6 Things to Know About Mammograms

3D mammograms provide clearer, multidimensional images that enable doctors to detect more types of breast cancer at earlier stages. Some 3D mammography systems, like the Senographe Pristina™, significantly improve the mammogram process for patients by increasing comfort and accuracy but adding no additional risk over traditional mammograms. Use this 6-step guide to learn more about the benefits of 3D Mammography and if it’s the right choice for you.

1. What is a 3D mammogram, and why is it different than traditional mammograms?

3D Mammography is the latest advancement in breast tissue scanning technology. As opposed to traditional mammograms that provide one-to-two layered images of breast tissue, 3D mammograms provide more detailed, multi-dimensional renderings of the entire breast, making it easier for doctors to identify signs of breast cancer and other abnormalities. 3D Mammography, otherwise known as breast tomosynthesis, is quickly becoming the preferred method of breast cancer screening for both doctors and patients because the superior images lead to more accurate results than alternative options.

2. Should I consider 3D mammography?

Each patient’s needs are different but, in short, yes. 3D mammograms are clearer than traditional scans, so doctors are able to detect more types of cancer and earlier signs of cancer. 3D mammograms are strongly advised for patients with a higher risk for breast cancer and patients with higher-density breast tissue. 3D mammograms also lead to less false positives. At Collom & Carney Clinic, we offer our patients the premier experience and technology of the Pristina™ 3D Mammography System.

3. How do I know if I am a high-risk patient for breast cancer?

According to the American College of Radiology, all women are encouraged to undergo a risk assessment at the age of 30 years old to assess their susceptibility to breast cancer. Patients with average risk should get annual mammograms every year, starting at 40 years old. Patients with a higher risk for breast cancer may need to start screening earlier in life and get more frequent scans. Some indicators of high-risk patients include a family history of breast cancer, evidence of certain gene mutations and being predisposed to a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Talk to a doctor sooner, rather than later, to assess your personal risk and make a plan for future screenings. 4. What should I expect during my mammogram? Will it hurt?

Your doctor should be able to give you specifics to each step of the process, but there is one important difference to consider when choosing which scan is right for you. Did you know that the number ONE* reason women don’t schedule a mammogram is due to fear because it is such an uncomfortable experience? The truth is that while this new technology provides far more valuable diagnostic images than other scans, some 3D mammography systems have also significantly improved the mammogram experience. Our 3D mammography machine here at Collom & Carney Clinic, the Senographe Pristina™ 3D, was specifically built with the comfort of the patient in mind. Other mammogram machines have sharp edges that require patients to reach for handlebars, causing muscle flexing and possibly obstructing scan results. The Senographe Pristina™ 3D features soft, rounded edges and armrests for patients to relax on during the exam. 83% of women find the Pristina to be more comfortable than alternative options, and 97% of women felt less anxious or no anxiety at all.

5. Are there any added risks to 3D mammograms?

Your doctor should be able to give you specifics to each step of the process, but there is one important difference to consider when choosing which scan is right for you. Did you know that the number ONE* reason women don’t schedule a mammogram is due to fear because it is such an uncomfortable experience?
